On the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site with Japan's highest salmon catch, chum salmon return to the coast and river mouths every autumn. Fishing is shore and river-mouth only — not upstream in the rivers themselves — and is free to anyone during the mid-September to mid-November run.
